Nicki & Dave Pullen retire after 17 years of service

Our co-owners are retiring after almost two decades of service to our local communities.

Nicki and Dave Pullen have been the Optician-owners of Pullen and Symes since 2003 and have been providing a high standard of eye care from our practices in Exeter and Ottery St Mary ever since.

Both have overseen the expansion of the practices, which involved moving to a significantly larger premises in Ottery, as well as completely refitting the Exeter practice and making distinct investments in a state-of-the-art consulting room.

Taking over the practices from their predecessor John Symes, who had built up a loyal following in Exeter and Ottery St Mary for over 30 years, Pullen & Symes today provide comprehensive eye care for over 35,000 clients.

The future of Pullen & Symes Opticians

Pullen & Symes will continue to be run by qualified Opticians Emma Hill and Sharon Maunder, and our departing owners have given us their blessing with our plans to evolve the business to the next level in independent Optometry.

Dave Pullen said: “Having worked with Emma for the last 15 years and now with Sharon adding her expertise by offering a bespoke dispensing service, I have no doubt they will continue the high level of optometry we have created at our two practices, and we can assure all our patients that they will be in professional and highly capable hands.”

Nicki Pullen said: “Our thanks must go to the thousands of patients who have helped us to build the Practices’ reputation over the past two decades. We genuinely appreciate the loyalty and support we have received throughout our time at Pullen & Symes.”

Who are Emma and Sharon?

Emma Hill has been working in the practice for 15 years, specialising in Ortho-K, contact lenses and dry eye problems. Having worked in the hospital eye service previously, that experience has proved vital in offering the best clinical service.

Her ambition is to develop the business to the highest level of patient care, investing in Optical Coherence technology, further specialist contact lens care and Colorimetry.

Emma said: “I’m sure I speak for my fellow team members, as well as the long list of customers that Nicki and Dave have looked after, when we wish them the best of luck in their retirement. They have always had a determination to create thriving optician’s Practices that are integral parts of their local communities and they have certainly achieved that.”

Sharon Maunder has joined the business from Brighton Eyecare, having been a qualified Dispensing Optician for 32 years with 30 years of them in management. Having worked in multiples and independent Opticians, she feels she wants to work in the independent sector so she can offer a personalised service taking the time needed to provide a bespoke service.

Sharon added: “Nicki and Dave have established two fantastic teams and we are all very committed to continue the standard of care that they have instilled in the practices. We are very excited for what the future will hold for Pullen & Symes.”
